WooCommerce allows merchants with a WordPress website to sell their products and services online. It has proven to be one of the more popular eCommerce platforms, and we’ve put together 10 important stats showcasing the power of WooCommerce and why you should consider using it for your company’s online sales.

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is designed for eCommerce businesses and allows them to sell products and services online. It’s a plugin that’s able to turn any WordPress website into an eCommerce store. Popular features include inventory management, secure payments, shipping and postage integration, order tracking, customer engagement and delivery status updates. It’s also one of the most straightforward eCommerce platforms available, meaning beginners can typically get set up without any issues.

10 Woocommerce stats

1) More than 5 million websites use Woocommerce

There are more than 5.1 million live websites currently using WoodCommerce to sell their goods. It accounts for 6.2% of the top one million eCommerce websites and has been downloaded an impressive 161 million times.

2) The plugin is downloaded at least 30,000 times every day

While identifying the exact numbers is tricky, it’s believed that the WooCommerce plugin is downloaded at least 30,000 times every day from WordPress.org. Overall, it receives between 1.5 and two million downloads each month.

3) More than 10 years powering eCommerce stores

WooCommerce launched in 2011 as WooThemes. In 2013, it hit one million downloads and was acquired by Automatic two years later, at which point it was renamed WooCommerce. By April 2015, it had reached seven million downloads

4) It’s the de facto choice for WordPress

WooCommerce isn’t the only eCommerce plugin for WordPress, but it is the most popular. Around 93% of all WordPress eCommerce websites use WooCommerce over another option. As far as market share is concerned, WordPress websites use the plugin almost exclusively.

5) $11.8bn in sales

By 2017, WoodCommerce stores collectively accounted for just under $10 billion (£8.1bn) in sales. Then, in 2019 the number increased to $11.8 billion (£9.5bn). Currently, that figure is more than $20 billion (£12.1bn) and growing from strength to strength.

6) You can sell anything with WooCommerce

WooCommerce’s flexibility means merchants can sell anything on their website. That includes physical products, subscriptions, memberships and appointments, meaning WooCommerce is essentially the swiss army knife of the eCommerce world.

7) Powers the most websites

When it comes to market share for websites, WooCommerce is the clear-cut winner. It powers over 29% of all online stores and supports 629,227 websites. In comparison, Shopify, another major eCommerce platform, supports just 272,146.

8) 66 languages supported

WooCommerce’s popularity means it needs to be able to cater to different languages. Fortunately, that’s not a problem as it’s available in 66 languages, including eight versions of Spanish, six versions of English and three versions of Chinese, French and Portuguese. No matter where you are in the world – and who you serve – there’s probably a WooCommerce language for your customers.

9) 12,000 businesses in the UK

The UK has the second-largest market share for WooCommerce websites, with more than 12,000 users. The US is the largest, boasting more than 230,000 online stores, while Australia comes in third at just over 10,000. Business and industry make up the most company types (19%), with shopping (13%) in second place and arts and entertainment (7%) in third.

10) More than 6,000 plugins

Currently, there are more than 6,000 known WooCommerce plugins for WordPress. Yet, the total number of plugins is likely to be far higher, thanks to the bespoke options made for websites by experts. One of WooCommerce’s biggest advantages is the ability to customise it to match the look of your website.
